John Kruk: 2005 Donruss Greats

Happy Belated Birthday John Kruk!

Say what? A post-career card of John Kruk wearing something Padres?  That's crazy. I almost wonder if more people know he played for the Padres or the White Sox? As I think many, if not most, think of him with tobacco stains and mullets as a member of the filthy Phillies.

This is the 2005 Donruss Greats card for Mr. Kruk. It's a beautiful card. I get the brightness of the bat but it just feels a tad bit overexposed. I totally love the complete career stats on the back. I'm sure there was some text they could have used, but chances are likely that it might have been some kind of boring, boilerplate material. Let the stats do the talking. His last season and a bit with the Padres really hurt his all time batting average, which would have been higher than the respectable .300, had he done better. Pujols is similar. Had he been able to retire a few years ago, his numbers would be, possibly, that much more impressive.

Donruss Greats is a 150 card set.  The set rightly, and wisely, included Darryl Strawberry.

You've seen the Kruk and the Strawberry. Do you collect a player that is in the set? Do you like the card design?

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. I'd have to dig through my binders to see if I have any cards from this set. I've definitely come across them and actually probably have at least one sitting in my A's, Padres, or Expos box. As for Kruk playing in San Diego, I remember that.

  2. I actually didn't know he finished his career with the White Sox.
I'm not a fan of this design. I'm not sure if it's the B&W photo or the light blue border with the fancy squiggles, but it's not for this collector.

  3. I like the design, and the bright bat!
